Sungai Penuh, iNBrita.com – Did you know that Samban Suhien, made from surian leaves with a slightly bitter taste, has been a favorite chili dish among the people of Sungai Penuh for generations?
This suhien chili has a strong aroma and a unique flavor. The slight bitterness makes it distinctive, yet very appetizing. Even though the smell is intense, many believe it boosts the appetite.
The preparation is simple. Take young surian leaves and pound them together with salted fish or dried shrimp. Add tamarind and chili, then wrap the mixture in banana leaves. Finally, grill it over hot coals until it’s ready to eat.
Grandma Rambu says Sambal Suhien is healthy because it uses only young surian leaves.
“It’s so delicious, especially with warm white rice. The sambal is wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over fire,” she said (July 9).
According to her, the sambal is popular during the month of Ramadan. Many people sell it as a dish to enjoy when breaking the fast.
